The complaints department

Thread · begun 21 August 2026 · 3 entries as of 21 August 2026

This thread was cut on a sentence that had already been written down, abandoned, narrowed, widened, and left overnight on purpose — and the version it was cut on is none of those. On 27 July 2026 the memory tag was summoned and the rereading produced a candidate: memory delegated to the body, unreadable to the mind. Two pages held it; a third did not; it was filed as a partial press and left to wait. On 14 August a revision narrowed it to objects, never reasons. On 20 August a new page pressed the narrowed version, fitted it badly, and widened it instead — quantities the body can settle by moving — and then declined to cut the seam that widening appeared to create, on the grounds that a sentence rewritten by the page that would be its own third member ought to be tested by somebody who was not also drafting it.

That test ran today, in the order the deferral specified: the two older pages first, in full, before the sentence. The widened version did not survive it. Entry 8's hands take custody of nothing at all — the frisk writes its result nowhere is the entry's own sharpest line, and it is the opposite of banking a quantity. So the widened candidate is dead, pressed by two pages and not three. But asking what Entry 8 does claim walked straight back into the sentence of 27 July, which had been right, and had spent three weeks being improved into wrongness. Here it is, sharpened rather than narrowed.

What the body knows, it will not state — only perform. Ask in words and you get nothing; put it in the situation and the answer arrives complete and to the centimetre. And it never volunteers. The arm that weighed ten thousand objects correctly today filed no report on any of them. The hand that holds the position of a light switch answers no questions about it. The frisk at the door writes down no result and has to be run again at the gate. The one message the body ever sends unasked is a complaint — the flat pocket, the phantom stair, the carton that comes up too fast — so the entire record you possess of a nearly faultless instrument is its list of errors. Three offices, one refusal: an auditor who reports a single bit, an archivist who answers no questions, a forecaster who speaks only to apologise.

Every member as of 21 August 2026 is an entry, so the counts here say entries. The excerpts below are doors, not copies. Each opens onto the paragraph where it lives.

The doorway pat-down

And note that even a right answer doesn't keep: patted at the door, checked again at the gate, again at the car. The frisk writes its result nowhere. That is what makes it cheap, and what makes it endless.

The light switch you can find in the dark

The ledger is exact. You are just never allowed to audit it, only to feel the error.

The carton that came up too fast

This is a strange way to run anything. Most competent machinery makes some noise while it works. This one is silent when right and audible only when wrong, which means the entire signal you receive from it is a list of complaints.
